What's Next: Rochester head to Montreal for another match with the Impact on Sunday, July 27 at 3:30 p.m. The Rhinos return home on Sunday, Sugust 5th to face the Atlanta Silverbacks at 6:00 p.m. at PAETEC Park.
With the Rochester Rhinos looking to extend their unbeaten streak to ten games, and the Montreal Impact trying to regain their early season form, the two rivals took the field for this nationally televised (Fox Soccer Channel) match. The first half played much like the gritty history the two teams share, with each side trying to establish themselves on the pitch. Although Montreal out-shot the Rhinos by a six to one margin, the half ended with the score nil to nil. The second half was a different story as the Rhinos seemed to draw energy from the raucous, season-high crowd (8,948) and immediately looked crisper. They found themselves in a place they had not been much in the first half; the offensive third of the field. That effort would finally pay off as Danny Earls recorded his first goal as a member of the Rhinos and put Rochester ahead by one. The goal was set up on a lefty cross from Steve Guppy that Montreal keeper Matthew Jordan managed to punch away from a hard charging Matthew Delicâte. The punch out, however, would find Earls just outside the back post who tallied a left footed volley into the back of the net. Montreal responded just nine minutes later to tie the match at one to one. A Rochester foul set up a free kick from 25 yards out that Montreal's Leonardo DiLorenzo hammered through the Rochester wall and tucked inside the left post past a diving Scott Vallow. The remaining 23 minutes of the match saw much action but no more goals were to be had. Montreal out-shot the Rhinos fourteen to six and Scott Vallow recorded three saves for the Rhinos. These same two teams take to the pitch again this Sunday in a 3:30 matchup in Montreal. |
