Rhinos Win Regular Season Finale

08/18/2012 8:55 PM -

The Rochester Rhinos finished their 2012 regular season with a 1-0 win against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday, August 18.  Andrew Hoxie scored a goal in the 86th minute when he shot the ball from 15 yards after a give-and-go pass from Tyler Rosenlund to secure three points for the Rhinos on the USL table.

The Rhinos need Antigua to take at least one point against the Richmond Kickers Sunday in Sticky Wickets Stadium to lock up the number two seed.  The Kickers beat the Barracuda 1:0 in their first meeting on August 17th.  The two teams will split the first tie breaker, head-to-head meetings, and the tie will be broken on goal differential.  Richmond leads Rochester by one goal in differential heading into the weekend.

Both the Hounds and Rhinos failed to convert on critical set pieces in the first half.

The Hounds had their first scoring chance in the 18th minute when George Kyriazis passed the ball in the box back to goalkeeper Kristian Nicht. Michael Green took the free kick from the top of the 18 yard line, but failed to score as the ball bounced off the Rhinos wall. In the 22nd minute Nikola Katic got called for pulling on the jersey of Rhino Tyler Rosenlund.  Pittsburgh's veteran goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap saved the low, hard, penalty shot down the middle by Rhinos striker Tam McManus.

At halftime the Rhinos led in shots 4-0, and corner kicks 3-2. The Rhinos controlled the tempo of the game through the midfield, but couldn’t score off multiple opportunities.

Coach Jesse Myers subbed in Hoxie and JC Banks in the 56th and 57th minutes. The Rhino’s MVP, Banks, nearly had a goal in the 69th minute when his shot from 10 yards nearly deflected off Green.  The Rhinos nearly scored again in the 71st minute when a header from five yards by Chris Estridge was saved by a diving Gilstrap.

The Rhinos opened the scoring in the 86th minute when Hoxie scored his second goal on the season against the Hounds. Hoxie’s last goal was against the Hounds at Sahlen’s Stadium in the 77th minute on July 21st.

The Rhinos returned three key players in their match against the Hounds.  Myers line-up was broken up last weekend against Charleston when McManus, Rosenlund and Banks were forced to sit due to disciplinary issues.  McManus and Rosenlund started, but Banks had to come off the bench as a substitute due to a continuing knee injury.  The Rhinos lost to the Battery 4:0, the clubs worst home defeat ever, on August 11th in Sahlen’s Stadium.

The Hounds finish 2012 in 10th place on the USL PRO table with 17 points.  The Rhinos have beaten the Hounds in seven of their past eight matches.  In the last six matches the Hounds finished 1-5. The Barracudas are the only team with fewer points than the Hounds, and they will finish last in the USL for 2012.

Information on the 2012 USL PRO playoffs at Sahlen’s Stadium will be available from the Rochester Rhinos on Monday morning.
