The Rochester Rhinos needed added extra time for the second consecutive match in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, but advanced to the Fourth Round with a 2:1 victory over Reading United AC in Sahlen's Stadium on Tuesday, May 27th 2014. Striker Colin Rolfe scored the game winning goal in the 119th minute, and midfielder Jonny Mendoza finished the match with a goal and an assist in the Rhinos come from behind victory over the visiting PDL side.
The Rochester Rhinos scored the game winning goal in the 119th minute of the match. Rhinos right back Jossimar Sanchez played a ball over the top to substitute Levi Houpeau who made a run in behind the Reading back four down the right flank. Reading center back Jordan Wilson came out to the right flank to clean up the service but was judged to have fouled Houapeu on the right flank 15 yards out from goal. Mendoza took the free kick and served the ball into the near post where Colin Rolfe deflected the ball past Reading goalkeeper Alex Bono and into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Rhinos entered the match 15-0-1 against opponents from a lower division in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, but trailed for the first time in the 2014 tournament after Rochester conceded the opening goal of the match in the 66th minute. Reading right winger Ignacio Maganto unlocked the Rhinos defense with a pass into the feet of left winger Nick Surkamp in the middle of the pitch 25 yards out from Rochester's goal. Surkamp drove into the Rhinos penalty area, and finished with a right footed shot over Rochester rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy's shoulder into the upper left corner of the net.
Rochester responded immediately off of the ensuing kickoff. Rhinos attacking midfielder Alex Dixon got loose down the right flank off a choreographed passing sequence. Dixon dribbled the ball intro the right corner before driving up the end line toward the penalty area and taking on a Reading defender. Dixon delivered a blistering service across the six yard box, where center midfielder Jonny Mendoza completed a 60 yard run by sliding in to finish the cross for the equalizer.
Both teams combined for only six shots on goal in a first half that saw Reading United AC take four shots to only two for the Rochester Rhinos.
Reading United AC had the first chance of the match in the 12th minute, but Rochester Rhinos rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy made his biggest save of the match to deny the PDL side a shock lead early in the match. In a copy of the sequence that would lead to their goal in the 66th minute, Reading launched a counter attack and right winger Maganto controlled the ball and cut into the middle of the pitch. He picked up his head and found left winger Surkamp who was making a run in behind the Rhinos back four. Maganto picked out Surkamp's run with an inch perfect pass, and Surkamp drove into the Rochester penalty area. Surkamp shot the ball from 15 yards out, but McCarthy flew to his left to parry the ball away.
The Rhinos had their best opportunity of the first half in the 36th minute. Mendoza played a through ball to striker Rolfe who was momentarily in behind Reading's back four. Holding midfielder Owen Griffith and center back Jordan Wilson were able to chase Rolfe down and clear the ball over the endline for a corner kick. Mendoza delivered the ensuing corner kick six yards past the far post, but Rochester center back Babacar Diallo got on the end of the service and headed it into the Reading goal mouth. Reading left back Quincy Thomas was there to clear the header off the goal line before Reading goalkeeper Alex Bono caught the second ball in his six yard box.
The second half was a much more open affair with both teams recording six shots, and both teams finding the back of the net.
The Rhinos had the first chance of the second half in 57th minute. Attacking midfielder Dixon dribbled across the 18 yard box before finding the feet of Mendoza who was running into the Reading penalty area. Mendoza drove into the box before playing a one-two with substitute Minh Vu. Mendoza got on the end of Vu's pass and collected the ball inside the six yard box at a tight angle to the left post. Mendoza played a diagonal ball back across the penalty area, but no one could put the ball into the back of the net for the home side.
The Rhinos exchanged chances after the 70th minute. Reading's standout striker Darius Madison got free in the Rhinos penalty area and received immediate attention from Rochester center back Diallo. Diallo slowed down Madison but Madison was still able to direct a shot on goal. Rhinos goalkeeper McCarthy made the kick save and the home side cleared the rebound to safety. At the other end the Rhinos earned a corner kick that Mendoza played into the far post. Walls had a free header from ten yards out but his effort was right at Bono.
The Rhinos looked for the game winning goal to break the 1:1 deadlock in the 82nd minute. Substitute JC Banks found Rolfe on the right side of the Reading penalty area. Rolfe took a touch before driving a shot on goal, but his effort found the hands of Bono.
Reading responded with a counter attack in the 85th minute. Center midfielder Graham Smith played a diagonal ball to Maganto running down the left side of the pitch. Maganto settled the ball and dribbled the ball to the top of the Rhinos box before hitting a shot that sailed just over the Rhinos goal.
Regulation ended with both teams level at one, and the Rhinos entered added extra time for the second consecutive match of the 2014 US Open Cup.
In the 98th minute Madison received his second caution of the match and was sent off by match referee Chris Trottier. Madison was engaged in a one versus one battle with Rhinos center back Walls on the right flank. Walls won the battle after Madison took a big touch and Walls was able to cut in front of him and shield the ball away from Madison. Madison went through Walls back to try to win the ball back, but the assistant referee waved his flag to indicate that he saw a foul. Trottier agreed and blew the whistle. He also felt the play warranted a caution – Madison's second of the match after he was booked in the 76th minute. Madison was sent off and Reading were forced to play the remaining 22 minutes of added extra time with ten men.
Rochester recorded five shots to zero for Reading in the remaining 13 minutes of the match
With the Rhinos holding a man advantage Dixon had the Rhinos first chance in the 101st minute. Dixon received the ball on the left flank near the top corner of the Reading penalty area. Dixon hit a dipping shot destined for the upper right corner of Reading's goal, however Bono was able to shuffle across his goal line and catch the ball over his head.
Four minutes later the Rhinos created another chance to score the game winning goal. Mendoza got loose down the left flank and took on Shane Campbell one versus one. Mendoza cut the ball back onto his right foot and created enough space to get a cross into the Reading penalty area. The service found the head of substitute Houapeu, but his header was right at goalkeeper Bono.
After steady pressure in the Reading half of the pitch in the second period of added extra time, the Rhinos had a shot on goal in the 116th minute. Mendoza ended a spell of possession for the Rhinos by finding the feet of Vu on the left side of Reading's penalty area. Vu cut into the middle of the box before hitting a shot right at Bono on the near post.
