- The Rochester Rhinos played to a draw with the Dutch Lions for the second time in eight days as forward Tam McManus rescued a point in stoppage time.
The Dutch Lions led Rochester twice in the match, but the Rhinos fought back to find the equalizer both times.
McManus and Graciano Brito took the opportunity to open their league scoring accounts with the Rhinos. Coach Jesse Myers rang in the changes on the second night of a back-to-back road trip, and Rochester is now focused on their Third Round U.S. Open Cup tie with the Philadelphia Union (MLS) on Tuesday, May 29th
The Dutch Lions opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Gibson Bardsley, the Dutch Lions young striker who ended the Rhinos streak of 568 minutes last Friday night, dribbled into the Rochester penalty area and served the ball across the top of the six yard box. The cross found Dutch Lions front runner Eli Gardner for a tap in to give the Dutch Lions a 1:0 lead.
Rochester drew level for the first time just after halftime when Brito scored his first league goal for the Rhinos. Dutch Lions center back Mertin Copier gave the Dutch Lions the lead for the second time in the 69th minute, but McManus scored his first league goal for the Rhinos in stoppage time to rescue a point for Rochester.
The Rhinos will travel to play Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union in PPL Park on Tuesday, May 27th, at 7:30PM as they continue their pursuit of the U.S. Open Cup. The last time the Rhinos beat a team from the MLS was in 2009 when they eliminated the defending MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew five to three one penalties.
The next Rhinos home game is June 2nd at 7 PM versus the Richmond Kickers. Tickets can be purchased by calling 585-454-KICK, by visiting rhinossoccer.com, or by visiting any Ticket Master retail location.
