ROCHESTER, NY- The Rhinos hosted Southie FC in the second round of the U.S Open Cup. The Rhinos came out to a quick 2-0 lead early on after Marcos Ugarte of the Rhinos went down inside the box after contact from behind. Volesky took the penalty kick to make it 1-0 Rochester in the 6’ minute. Three short minutes later Andre Fortune II had a beautiful solo goal as he curled the ball into the corner.
Southie FC never seemed to run out of gas as they continued to challenge the ball. However, they couldn’t stop a third Rhinos goal as newcomer Tergou led Ugarte who chipped it right over Southie FC goalkeeper O’Donnell in the 26’ minute. This was Urgate's first goal as a Rhino.
Asani Samuels came alive in the 42’ minute with not one, but two goals. The second came with an assist from Volesky as Samuels hit it from about six yards out. Rhinos went into the half with a 5-0 lead.
At the half Rochester subbed in Apostolopoulos and Guilavogui for Samuel and Volesky. Southie FC started the second half with an own goal in the 48’ minute making it 6-0 Rhinos. The sixth goal of the match allowed the Rhinos to break their record for most goals scored in a US Open Cup game. The previous record was from their 5-1 victory over the NH Phantoms in 2006. But they weren’t don’t there.
Southie used the only two subs they brought in the second half sending in Bakhtiari and Fitzpatrick.
Asani Samuels led the team in scoring tonight with a hat trick to make it 7-0 Rochester. The Rhinos take on Lansdowne Bhoys in the Third Round of the U.S Open Cup on June 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Rochester Rhinos Stadium.
